You follow a rich and well-written plot, you explore the vast setting made available by the developers and, in the meantime, you complete missions of various kinds, collecting an infinite number of collectibles.Īs happens with most of the titles belonging to this genre, also in this case the story starts immediately very strong, maintaining a crazy pace for at least four or five hours, and then diluting in a sea of very similar missions. The structure of Mafia III is the now tested one of all open worlds. The story is told with an effective documentary approach, proposing continuous leaps between Lincoln Clay’s adventure and subsequent investigations into it. And that’s why anyone should experience Lincoln Clay’s adventure, regardless of the actual quality of the game (more than decent anyway). Mafia III’s denunciation is solid, powerful and effective like a punch in the stomach.
In the role of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran born to a black mother and an Italian father, the player lives on his skin all the social injustices to which blacks were subjected in the historical period of reference.Įxperiencing on their own virtual skin the shame and discomfort of being treated like animals, of being constantly exploited, insulted, harassed, barely tolerated, even the least empathic player cannot continue to ignore the reality of the facts. The absence of feel-good filters or any form of political correctness makes Mafia III the ideal spot against all types of racism. The way the developers portrayed the New Orleans climate of ’68, how whites treated people of color and the discrimination blacks were subjected to with excruciating regularity, is sincere and brutal. Mafia III opens with a very clear message from Hangar 13: what you will see is horrible and could be offensive but we wanted to make you understand what people who were exposed to any form of discrimination felt (and still feel today). The excellent dubbing helps to further improve the quality of the experience. The expressive capacity of the polygonal models during the narrative sequences is excellent. The team has chosen a historical period and a setting of great impact, focusing on a fictional version of New Orleans (here called New Bordeaux) in the late 1960s and putting the player in the role of Lincoln Clay, the protagonist of color in a world that would have easily done without him. The developers and the publisher, on the other hand, have moved on to tell a completely new story. If Hangar 13 and 2K Games hadn’t decided to change the setting and historical period, the result would probably have been the same.
The quality of the game was such that the second chapter of the series was literally crushed by the comparison with its predecessor, even more than by that with contemporary rivals. When it came out, the first Mafia was a real gem. This is the case with Mafia III, third chapter of a historical saga that has always been appreciated for its narration, dialogues and characterization of the characters.
